History

Tunnel View

186 years ago, Houston was founded on August 30 by brothers from New York, Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen, on land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou.

Houston gets its name from General Sam Houston, who once served as Tennessee governor, U.S. congressman, and president of the Republic of Texas. After the attack at the Alamo in San Antonio in late February and early March 1836, Houston retaliated a few weeks later against Mexican troops. At the San Jacinto River in East Texas, Texas forces attained victory and captured their enemy commander. As a result, independence was gained for the Republic of Texas. The Allen brothers then purchased 6,642 acres along the west bank of Buffalo Bayou which would become Houston.
